LED floodlight for outdoor mounting

If you would like to install wall lights and outdoor spotlights for stationary mounting on your property, LED floodlights are an energy-efficient and durable solution. brennenstuhl® wall and outdoor floodlights comply with the latest LED technology. This not only provides you with modern light, but also saves a lot of energy costs. Two series of brennenstuhl® LED floodlights suitable for stationary wall mounting, which are suitable for permanent outdoor use, are the mains-operated LED floodlights JARO and AL.

Since there are different models with different product characteristics, you should consider the following points when purchasing:

  • Is a motion sensor necessary?
  • Which light colour is suitable for the outside?
  • How many watts or lumens are recommended for outdoor use?

If you want to install an LED floodlight outdoors, you must also make sure to use at least IP44. JARO models without motion detector comply with protection class IP65, the other JARO models and the AL LED floodlights comply with protection class IP44.

Why an LED spotlight with motion detector?

An infrared motion detector ensures that the illumination is switched on or off automatically. Practical places of use are, for example, entrance areas, driveways or carports. In addition to increased safety and orientation, reasons for a motion detector include energy savings, automation of outdoor lighting and protection against burglary. Automation not only provides safety by minimising the risk of accidents through illumination, but also serves as a deterrent against burglars.

An outdoor LED spotlight with motion detector saves energy costs because the detector only activates after movements have been detected. When activated, the luminaire immediately reaches maximum luminous flux, i.e. maximum brightness. Otherwise, the LED luminaire is switched off. To ensure that the sensor does not activate the spotlight at the slightest movement, the sensitivity can be adjusted. In this way, you achieve automatically triggered lighting in the outdoor area that is adjusted to your needs.

The LED spotlights with motion detectors from brennenstuhl® can differ in their detection range and angle of coverage. AL LED spotlights with motion detectors have a detection angle of 180° and a range of up to 12m, JARO LED spotlights with motion detectors have a 120° detection angle and a detection range of 10m. Switch-on time, twilight sensor and sensitivity sensor are adjustable. With AL, the switch-on time is adjustable from 10 sec to 4 min, with JARO from 10 sec to 5 min.

Which light colour for outdoor use?

The colour temperature in Kelvin indicates where the light colour of the LED spotlight lies in the spectrum from yellowish-warm to bluish-cool. The LED spotlight AL from brennenstuhl® with OSRAM SMD LEDs gives your entrance area, your driveway or your terrace a warm and atmospheric light colour with 3000 K, which shines in soft yellow and orange tones. This creates a rather cosy ambience.

The Everlight SMD LED installed in the JARO LED spotlights convinces with its special light diffusion for large-area illumination with a light colour of 6500 K. The JARO LED spotlights also have a very pleasant appearance. The light colour of the JARO LED spotlights is therefore more like daylight. Further information on the light colour or wall mounting of brennenstuhl® LED outdoor floodlights can be found in the product category.

How many watts or lumens in outdoor areas?

The wattage is known from earlier lighting, e.g. light bulbs. The luminous flux in lumens is still unfamiliar. Although watt specifications are still advertised in connection with LED lamps, the number of lumens is more meaningful. The decisive value for the brightness of an LED spotlight is the luminous flux. This describes the actual light output of the light source. The luminous flux in lumens indicates how much light a light source emits in all directions.

The required lumen or watt value of the LED spotlight depends on various factors:

  • What illuminance should be present at a given distance.
  • Where and at what height the spotlight is planned to be mounted.
  • The illuminance is given in lux. For example, approx. 10 - 20 lux is needed to illuminate a garage entrance.
  • The illuminance does not decrease linearly over distance but quadratically, which means that even at small distances the light is considerably weaker.
